I confess, I have not been a huge Bethel-Thompson fan, but he managed the hell out of this game. Opened with a terrific drive: calm, easy throws and a terrific TD. His arm has easy gas. He ran a couple of times when he shouldn't have, he gave up a sack in the red zone, and threw a terrible almost pick in the 4th, but he led a game winning drive. He looked comfortable in hurry up mode and on the move and he fed all of his receivers. Professional work tonight from MBT. Honour is due.
I know…56 yards on the ground, no bueno, but I thought that two things looked good and we won, so factor in a bump for all grades with that context. White showed some skill at catching out of the backfield and I think that could be a real weapon down the road and he had a couple of superb blitz pickups that led to huge plays. It wasn’t flashy but some stuff worth celebrating.
7 different receivers caught balls. Braverman showed a little Wes Welker waggle to him early in the game, Noel and Collins both had some terrific yards after catch. Yes, I deducted a + for Collins Jr. carrying the ball on the field side and not with 3 points of contact on the TD turned fumble. Rogers was fantastic when it counted. Huge 2pt conversion and blitz pickup and my guy Gittens JRr putting up the game winning TD, no big deal. Strong unit that delivered.
A unit that has had a lot of turnover and injury but they kicked butt tonight. Yeah, I'd like to see fewer penalties, but they only gave up one sack and they converted 3rd and short pushes. Room to grow, especially opening up lanes for running, but good pass pro night.
Charleston Hughes was clearly amped up for this game against his old team so I'll give him a break on the offsides and the late hit, but those must go. Calgary ran for 100 yards but not having Nevis as a stopper in the middle was a factor. Oakman showed why they liked him in camp and he delivered real pressure on a three man front on the final interception. Guys got too far upfield on their pass rush. Huge fumble recovery for Hughes.
Muabma was exactly as advertised. He laid some absolute hammers on guys and although a few needed some more wrap up, he was a force in the middle of the field. Chris Edwards earned the unit a + with his defending on the redzone goal line stand (review approved too). McCoil showed his ability to punish in the running game and the unit played well. Love to see a little more out of Judge and if they run that QB fake boot, make him pay!
Yeah, I'm biased about DBs, what of it. I thought the unit absolutely stood out tonight. Took away the deep shot, close man coverage and came up in run defense with violent intentions. The PI call on JR was garbage and Shaq Richardson was huge when it counted, helping to force the fumble and the game clinching interception. Still would love tighter coverage on blitzes and some more wrap up on tackling but they kept Calgary’s pass game under control.
Good: Bede’s 54-yard field goal, the game winning field goal, and a 77 yard punt. Kickoff coverage was also fantastic. Smothering and energetic.
Bad: The missed gimme kick, the 38.4 net average on punts.
Ugly: Blocked punt with brutal personal protector work, opening punt return drop and the punt return game in general.
Terrific game plan, and a well scripted opening drive. The decision to go for a 58 yd kick was not good; generally good challenges, although the PI one was thin. The turnover dagger play was seen 100 miles away and going for 2 in the 4th worked but was chasing points. And Jordan needed to be doubled in the red zone. Great first game for a new staff.
